In this article I am going to share 3 important facts about cleansing diets and how to do a healthy cleanse that is safe, effective and easy to follow.
Now depending on what you read, these diets either don’t work, are just a fad, or are the greatest thing since sliced bread.
To begin I think it’s important to look at what a large percentage of the American diet looks like.
Judging from the obesity rate in the US, I would say a majority of people are eating a toxic diet consisting of greasy fried foods, sugary soda’s, energy drinks, processed fatty foods, and far too many simple carbohydrates. Not to mention the lack of exercise in society today. Wouldn’t you agree?
In my research for this article I came across just about every type of diet cleanse out there.
Here’s What You Need to Know About Cleansing Diets
- They are not the end-all for loosing weight (as some will have you believe)
- They can be dangerous
- They won’t produce long lasting results unless you commit to a lifestyle change
What is a “Cleanse” or “Detox” Diet?
The theory behind detoxing or cleansing is to rid the body of impurities that build up over time. Toxins and pollutants in the environment such as cleaning chemicals in the home, exhaust fumes, toxins in the food we eat, (preservatives) excessive alcohol intake, poor diet habits are all things that can contribute to this build up.
Prior to the detox craze of the last several years, detoxification was typically used in the medical field to assist in life-threatening situations such as overdoses of drugs, alcohol or poisons. Fast forward to today and there are all types of popular trendy cleanses targeting the liver, kidneys, small intestines and the colon; there is even what one company calls a full body cleanse.
The most famous of all cleansing diets is the Master Cleanse which has been around for decades. In my opinion, (and many doctors) the Master Cleanse walks the line of putting you in the danger zone.
This 10 day cleanse begins with drinking an herbal laxative tea twice daily, morning and evening. The rest of this cleanse consists of drinking nothing but lemonade, (up to 12 glasses per day) mixed with maple syrup, cayenne pepper and sea salt. That’s it… Not very healthy sounding if you ask me!
The Danger With These Types of Diets Are:
You are putting your body into total shock by denying it the proper vitamins, nutrients, minerals, and proteins required to sustain a healthy system. At best, short term fasting (cleansing) can produce fatigue, muscle loss, and irritability. Long term detoxing, (such as the Master Cleanse) can cause dehydration, cramping, bloating, nausea and in some rare cases even death.
Before starting any type of cleanse I suggest increasing your water intake and reducing the amount of high fat starchy foods. Next, begin by replacing them with vegetables, fruits and a small amount of protein daily for at least 3 days before the detoxing begins. This will allow your body to ease into what’s to come during the next 7 to 10 days.

Yes and no… Common sense will tell you that if your body is use to eating fast/junk food on a regular basis as shown in the left image above, and all of the sudden you restrict your body of all foods except water and juice for an extended period of time, sure you will lose some weight.
The problem is, most of the weight loss will be water weight. Once you get back to your normal eating habits you’ll gain it all right back, in many cases, even more.
Doing a straight out detoxification cleanse to lose weight in my opinion isn’t healthy as discussed above.

While our bodies are built to naturally flush out toxins and impurities from the foods we eat and the environment around us, doing a cleanse can be a great way to jumpstart both your mind and body when starting on any diet plan. Detoxing should not be used solely as a way to lose weight. Long term cleansing diets can lead to health problems, as always when starting any diet plan, you should consult your doctor prior to beginning.
