Digestive Enzymes Benefits – What Does Your Gut Tell You?

Digestive Enzymes Benefits

What digestive enzymes benefits can I expect by changing my diet?

In this article we will discuss 5 different foods that offer digestive relief. Let me ask you a couple of questions. Are you in tune with your body?

Have you ever gotten that “gut” feeling something is going to happen, either good or bad? Well, your gut is pretty darn intuitive and 9 times out of 10 its right.

Not only can it guide you through everyday situations, your gut plays a major role in your overall health. So pay attention because I am going to share with you the benefits of digestive enzymes. Now is the time to start listening to your gut!

Today about 1/2 the population in the U.S. or just over 150 million people have digestive issues.

The role of digestive enzymes are to break down the food we eat into smaller parts in order to be absorbed by each cell in the body.

Poor digestion is the result of an enzyme deficiency and can cause an assortment of gastrointestinal issues including:

  1. Bloating
  2. Cramping
  3. Constipation
  4. Belching and Flatulence
  5. Acid Reflux and Heartburn

Most, if not all diseases begin in the gut.

That statement was made over 2,000 years ago by Hippocrates and today the medical community is beginning to agree. Diseases such as, arthritis, autism, diabetes, depression and chronic fatigue syndrome, eczema, obesity and many others are being linked back to poor digestive health.

The digestive process begins in the mouth.

I guess that’s why my parents always use to tell me to chew my food at least 26 times before swallowing. I highly doubt they understood the digestive enzymes benefits behind it, but they were right.

Chewing stimulates saliva production, the longer you spend chewing, the more time salvia enzymes have to do their job.

This makes the production workload less on your stomach and small intestine. Other organs, mainly the pancreas are alerted that something is on its way.

Here’s an interesting fact I picked up from Dr. Mercola

Chewing gum actually tricks your body into thinking it is digesting something and starts the digestive process moving. Oh when I think of all those days I would pop a piece of gum into my mouth throughout the day, all the wasted enzymes…

What Foods are Digested Where?

Healthy Foods to Eat

There are three basic food enzymes that help us digest our food.

  • Carbohydrates begin in the mouth. (Amylase)
  • Protein is primarily digested in the stomach. (Protease)
  • Fats are digested in the small intestine. (Lipase)

Five Foods That Offer Digestive Enzymes Benefits

Fermented foods offer living bacteria and promote a healthy GI.

The goal is to increase the ratio of good to bad bacteria by eating foods that contain probiotics (probiotics contain a variety of healthy bacteria).

1. Sauerkraut (fermented cabbage)

Always choose sauerkraut from the refrigerated section because it is freshly made. Often times canned products lose much of the good bacteria due to the pasteurization process.

2. Kombucha

Fermented Black Tea – along with the beneficial probiotics, kombucha is packed with additional antioxidants.

3. Kimchi

This spicy fermented cabbage is a Korean traditional condiment which can contribute to a healthy gut. Recent studies are finding that the bacteria in Kimchi has been found to improve immunity.

4. Jerusalem Artichokes

These are particularly high in a insoluble fiber known as inulin. Inulin ferments in the colon and butyrate is formed as a byproduct of this fermentation. Butyrate also contains strong anti-inflammatory properties.

5. Cruciferous Vegetables (broccoli, kale, cauliflower and cabbage)

Leafy green vegetables can also help to reduce inflammation along with reducing the risk of colon, bladder, liver, and stomach cancer.

In today’s world of fast and processed foods it is more difficult for the body to break down food and absorb the nutrients our bodies need to maintain a healthy gut.

  1. My problem was digestion….bloating was the big issue or that awful feeling of indigestion. It would get so bad I would be up all night till 6am! Rolaids and tums…HATED that chalky taste and did nothing for me. These Isotonix Digestive enzymes are AMAZING!! I have them in my purse. No more suffering for me!! They are a God Sent for me….love this product!

    • Hey Linda,
Glad to hear the digestive enzymes are working so well for you. I have been lucky and never have had a major problem, other than the occasional heart burn. I’ve been taking this product daily anyway for the probiotic benefit. Since so many issues start in the gut, it is better to be safe than sorry.
      Thanks for the comment!

    • Hey Lisa,
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Not only is everyone eating poorly these days, the quality of our produce etc. has been diminished for various reasons, we are not getting the nutrients from our food like we did even 20 years ago. Through my research I am happy to have learned that the medical community is coming to realize that most diseases start in the gut.
      Thanks again!
      Richard
